Foster Home or Adopter Needed ASAP - Resident Cat Stressed!

Meet Brooklyn! She is a GORGEOUS 50 lb. blue and white, female pit mix. She is approximately 1 1/2 years old. She is up to date on her shots, spayed and micro chipped.

Brooklyn came from a NYC kill shelter and is now in Baltimore. She is a very sweet and playful dog but also appreciates some quality couch time with her master. She needs to be re-homed asap as she is not suited for a home with cats. Unfortunately in order to rescue her from death row, I had to take that risk without knowing if she would work with cats or not. Goes without saying, my cat has been in hiding and losing weight since Brooklyn came to the house. :(

Brooklyn is good with other dogs but would benefit from being the only dog as she requires a lot of attention. We would consider another dog with equal energy level and an experienced owner. :) Brooklyn is also good with kids and is crate trained.

She does however need to be placed as soon as possible. She is quite the looker and often draws attention during her walks around town, and will be missed but this is by far the best for everyone.

More Cats - Kavanagh Kittens

Happy Holidays!

I haven't been doing much dog rescue lately...but I have turned into the CAT WHISPERER! I can't turn my back on any animal...and these kittens are no exception. I recently moved to Baltimore County and my new neighbors left their cat behind. I knew she recently had a litter but I did not know they left the babies there too! Animal Control has not been able to get them yet but I have been feeding them. For a few weeks I only thought there were 2 kittens but a new one has appeared now that they are at the exploring age. I estimate them to be about 10 weeks but I am not an expert! They have shelter as they can get in and out of the house and there is a screened porch. They are fed regulary by myself and a neighbor.

I am looking for foster homes for the kittens and mother. I would like to catch them, have them checked out by a vet and fixed. They are all brown tabbies...but the latest kitten to appear has a very beautiful pattern. I will get betters pics soon. I am still gaining the little one's trust. I can not take them in but I would in a heartbeat if I could.

Athletes, mayor launch anti-animal abuse campaign

BALTIMORE - Baltimore Oriole Adam Jones and fighter John Rallo are joining Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to launch an ad campaign against animal abuse.
They will launch the "Show Your Soft Side" campaign outside City Hall on Thursday morning. The campaign shows athletes, including Jones, Rallo and Ravens linebacker Jarret Johnson, showing their pets some love with the message "Only a punk would hurt a cat or dog." There are also a public service messages for radio.
The campaign was one of the recommendations included in a report from animal cruelty task force created after a series of highly publicized animal cruelty cases, including a pit bull puppy set on fire.

Dundalk Cats - Update 9.21.2011

Hello there. I just wanted to update everyone on the status of the cat situation in Dundalk. I have been offline and haven't had a chance to post new information. We are helping a senior woman place over 40+ cats. When we were first posted about the cats we thought there were 20 cats in need but there were many more. We are not a cat rescue, but we were asked to help and will do what we can to save as many as possible before they end up at animal control. The woman is overwhelmed and the cost of maintaining the cats has caused a strain financially and emotionally.

The cats that I will be listing on our new petfinder page are friendly and highly adoptable cats. None of these cats have been outside cats they are all inside cats. There are other cats that are feral in the home. We are looking into special homing for them but the difficult decision might be made to euthanize them as they are absolutely feral "indoor" cats.

We have been vetting and fixing as many cats as we can but we don't have the finances to do them all and the breeding cycle is non-stop. Currently there are three nursing mothers and 15 unweaned kittens. The cats are aged 3 weeks to 13 years old. They are well socialized and friendly cats but with this many cats in one home upper respiratory infections are common and of course a lot of inbreeding. We have contacted the Feralstat company about their brand of feline birth control but they said they are not able to issue any new prescriptions at this time and to check back next month.

Homes were found for Frick & Frack(brothers), Raven, and Princess. Out of the last four we had spayed, three were pregnant. If we would not have chosen them there would be 6 nursing litters RIGHT NOW! These cats have no were to go. Rescues are full and animal control can take all the cats at one time but their prognosis is not good because they will overwhelm the shelter. We want to help place as many as possible in good homes vetted and altered.

Please help if you can by fostering, networking or donations if possible. WE ARE DESPERATE FOR FOSTER HOMES so that we can wean this colony down to a manageable number. We know we are a dog rescue... but hey lets don't discriminate when it comes to furbabies needing help. We are assisting an elderly woman rehome over 20 cats. Starr was turned into BARCS with bilateral cherry eyes because her family thought she was ugly. She was 10 months old at the time and had been raised around other small children in the house. Jen, her guardian Angel, swooped in and fostered Starr the next day because she wanted to get her eyes fixed. She didn't know that cherry eye isn't painful, but boy did it look like it was.

Jen fostered her and had her vet send a request over to Janet Isherwood for surgery. Starr did great and needed 2 weeks of quiet before going to a forever home. Starr is such a puppy! Rambunctious and fun and silly and waggy and licky! She had an adoption application and the person looked like a good candidate. BARCS had originally thought Starr was 2, but her teeth were brand, spanking new. The adopter's dogs got along great with Starr, and the adopter was really excited that Starr was as young as she is. A week later, the adopter says she wants to return Starr because she was too much of a puppy. Apparently, the adopter failed to mention that she had 2 small children and an infant in the home. Starr is great with kids, but she doesn't have a really good off switch. Adopter couldn't redirect Starr, and Starr came back to BARCS. She then came back to Jen's vet for boarding until she could find a home for her.

Baltimore Humane Society told BARCS they would take Starr. They thought she would love the wide open spaces and swimming pool and such. It was thought that the cherry eye was returning. She did have another surgery, and then another surgery.

One of the gals who works at Towson Vet was trying to take some pictures of Starr. There is only one, because, despite her cone on and after effects of anesthesia, she was a total wiggle butt and all the other pictures were blurry. She called Jen to tell her that BHS recommended medical fostering for Starr until her eye really heals. She needs to be in a laid back environment where she won't play or run or be her puppy self for about 3 weeks.

Her Guardian Angel loves this dog and she wants to follow it through to the end, ensuring she gets a forever home. Starr is still under her Angel's watch. She is about 15 months old now, but you'd never know it. She is great with dogs, cats, kids, adults, men, women, everything. She was interested in cats when I had her for walks and stuff, but I found her to be very easy to redirect. She does need mental stimulation. She needs her mind to be exhausted so she can physically rest.

WOW...some days when you are ready to throw in the rescue towel...someone amazing makes you think twice. I have been blessed working along with many great people that want the best for the animals in our community. I received a wonderful email this week, that I kept reading over and over. Then I asked if I could share it....

I met Jen saving Jelly Belly..... a 102lb pit bull. She is now right where she should be in a loving home and half her weight!

Shortly after Jen saved Raven...and the rest is history!

Dear Michelle,

It occurred to me today, that I never actually sat down to write you a note of thanks for helping me help the dogs at BARCS. Today was Kat Knauff's last day there, and she and I stumbled down memory lane. One of the things we laughed about was the use and overuse of the same name for the animals. There was Jelly Belly the emaciated dog, and Jelly Belly the way overweight dog. It seemed so funny to use the same name on two totally different shaped dogs.

Jelly Belly the emaciated dog went to rescue right away. It seems as though there is always space for a super thin dog because they have no energy and are so listless. Unfortunately, Jelly Belly the curvy dog was not so lucky. I had offered to pay for medical boarding for JB so she could get a full physical to determine if she was healthy overall. BARCS would be able to adopt her out later. Kat thought that was a great idea but reminded me that I had to have a rescue pull her in order for me to "foster" her medical care. Kat suggested that I contact you.

I believe I started our conversation rambling "Hi Michelle, my name is Jen and Kat from BARCS gave me your number to see if you and I could work together to save a dog." You heard the words Kat and BARCS, and you gave me your full attention. Without knowing me if you fell over me, you trusted me and my commitment to the dogs at BARCS and agreed to pull Jelly Belly and take her to the vet and then find a forever home for her. OMG! I could not believe what a load you took off of my heart and shoulders at that moment. You and I talked and emailed and stayed in touch throughout JB's care, and it was, and continues to be, a wonderful relationship.

I called you a couple of other times for dogs at BARCS, but those dogs were either adopted or found a different rescue before you could call Kat. And then there was Raven. I swooped into BARCS when it was clear broken legged Raven was not going to be rescued. It was October and rescue funds were completely dried up. She was going to be humanely euthanized. I told Kat that I was on my way to BARCS to get Raven and for her to figure out how I was going to take her without a rescue being involved. I became Raven's foster. I took her to my vet and had her broken leg x-rayed and splinted. She was in otherwise perfect health, so Raven would just need to come to the vet once a week for five weeks to get her splint changed. I put a plea out on facebook. Kat put a plea out on emails. No one responded, and then I called you. I believe I started that conversation with "I have another dog for us to save."

I explained that Raven's leg would be paid for by me and that she needed quiet. I had brought her home with me for a weekend, and she growled at the other dogs and my kids. I told you that when you asked if she was reactive. It never occurred to me to lie. We did so well together with Jelly Belly, I felt I could give you full disclosure. I may have been begging for you to take her at that point. And then you did something no one else did. Instead of ignoring the email and facebook pleas for help, you told me the truth.

You had the guts to tell me what no other rescue would: Raven was a long shot. She was reactive and growly, and it was very possible that she was going to need a lot of training and socialization. You told me that Raven was a huge risk to take on because the time it took to rehabilitate her may be the same amount of time to work with five other dogs with less issues. In other words, it was a numbers problem. No rescue could afford to take the financial or moral risk to work with her.

That really, really pissed me off. I saved this dog from being euthanized so she could be euthanized after her leg was repaired? Not a chance! I wasn't mad at you, although, I'm sure my tone of voice changed significantly when you told me that; I was mad at the sheer numbers of dogs that are out there that need our help. We are euthanizing the wrong species. Dogs didn't ask to be over bred and uncared for.

I then did what everyone knew but me; I adopted Raven. She is the funniest, cutest, most maddening, intelligent dog I've ever had the pleasure to be owned by. I became a foster failure. I was worried and told Kat that adopting Raven meant not helping other dogs as much. Her leg rebroke twice and she drained me financially. I could have helped 20 dogs with what I spent on her medical bills. Kat gave me her blessing.

I want to thank you for being there for me when I called you out of the blue about Jelly Belly and a couple of other dogs. You didn't hesitate to help me. When I asked you to help me with Raven, you said no and told me why. I have such a great appreciation for your honesty. I know Raven's story would have ended differently if you didn't return my calls.

So, we've worked on two dogs from start to finish, and we continue to update each other on our success stories. You and I have made a difference together, and it is a privilege to "know" you and work with you.
I know in my heart of hearts that any dog I ask you to help me with will get 100% of your attention. You are a blessing.

Gizmo (White and Brindle) and Omega (Black with white chest and socks) are looking for a home together or seperately. Their family is going through a divorce, a move and a new baby. Sadly Gizmo and Omega need to be rehomed. Gizmo was adopted by this family 5-6 years ago. Omega was adopted from BARCS about 4.5 years ago.

Both dogs are up to date on shots and spayed/neutered. Gizmo does well with Omega but he does not do well with other dogs. Omega is fine with other dogs. Both have lived or been around small animals. (birds, ferretts, cats)

This beautiful pup is Clarice. She is an American Bulldog/Pit Bull Mix. Clarice was born around 11/1/10. Last weigh in she was around 26lbs. She is crate tained and housebroken.

Here is what Mica's rescuer, Maddy has to say about her!

Mica is nearly a year old APBT. She was found wandering the streets of Baltimore in bad condition. Efforts to find her owners were unsuccessful. I've been fostering Mica for a couple months now. She is a great little dog with much drive and spunk. She is incredibly smart and will work for anything so long as its food-dry kibble will have her doing back flips for you! She is very human motivated, and very concerned about what her human thinks of her. She wants to please so badly!

Mica is spayed and up to date on shots. She has a mild heart murmur which will most likely cause her no trouble. She is 41 pounds. She has displayed some allergies to beef.

Mica is great with new people she is meeting in her own home, though bashful with strangers outside of the house. She is still learning that the outside world isn't such a scary place, and a little bit of hot dog on walks is helping her learn this. Mica loves all people and with a gentle and strong hand she will blossom into a confident dog.

Mica is house trained and crate trained. She does not chew so long as she as appropriate toys are provided. She has also learned that baby gates are boundaries to be obeyed. She knows basic commands and is a good listener, though does need some work on leash walking (she's not a big puller, but she only has two speeds-fast walk and stop). She has a huge potential in obedience. Mica is always thinking outside the box to work for you. Just the other day I had her lay down and when I called her to me, she crawled across the floor on her belly because she didn't want to break her down!

Mica would do best as an only dog. She has little personal boundaries with other dogs and will most definitely NOT back down from a scuffle. She is excellent with cats she knows, though she does have prey drive and would probably chase a cat a yard.

Well I guess we spoke to soon. Ellie has not been herself since her spay surgery. We knew she was in heat during her surgery we did not know she was going through a false pregnancy. She has not been as active as she usually is and started the bad habit of only eating people food. (We had to spoil her during her recovery!! We wanted to make sure she ate something!) So back to the vets she went today and $538.00 later she is back home resting with her family. Let's see if she is back on her feet soon. We will keep you posted!

Ellie is feeling better today and was walking around some. She looks a lot better then she did last night. I picked her up so that her family doesn't have to deal with all the "yuckies" that come with taking care of a sick dog. She has a nasty infection going on. We are taking her to our vet, Dr. T, at Light Street Animal Hospital. I think she needs a drain for all this fluid but lets see what the doctor has to say. She will probably stay a night or two but I will let you know tomorrow when I get online to update everyone. We are low on funds, if you would like to help please feel free to contact our veterinarian.

Ellie Update 2011 (aka Jelly Belly)

Wow, it is 2011! Happy New Year everyone! Ellie, formally Jelly Belly, is doing great in foster care. She is now 75lbs! It is hard to believe she was 102lbs 3 months ago. Ellie is a perfect house dog, I can't believe no one has scooped her up yet.

We spent New Years at the park. Enjoy the pictures of Ellie in all her glory! She told me she wants a tummy tuck when this is all over.... I don't blame her! :)

Sydney was adopted from EBBRR as a puppy and her owner has an emergency situation where he needs to return her to rescue. We are looking for a long term, temporary, foster home or a new adoptive home. Her owner is aware that finding a temporary home is not very easy and understands that she most likely will have to be placed up for adoption.

Sydney is being evaluated again since she is no longer a puppy and then we will have more information about her. Sydney is a loving dog with strong American Bulldog traits.

Jelly Belly Update

Hello everyone!
Are you enjoying the beautiful fall weather? Our dogs sure are! I know you have all been waiting patiently for Jelly Belly updates and the wait is OVER!

Jelly Belly was pulled from BARCS, September 18, 2010. She was not eating at the shelter and since she was so huge, they felt she needed medical attention that they could not provide. We had to help her, so we did! We transferred her to our vet, Dr. T, at Light Street Animal Hospital. We had a complete blood panel done and boarded her until we could transfer her to a temporary kennel situation. She did not last long in the kennel as she started with a cough and back to the vet's she went. She had another blood panel done, put on antibiotics for an URI and on a prescription diet. Jelly Belly just did not want to eat. During the time we got involved this dog, she was not eating but she still had energy and she was still a happy dog. The problem is she did not want to eat any kibble at all. The vet said stay strong and do not give in, she will eat eventually. Kathy at the Happy Hound Hotel found a perfect foster for us and she has had Jelly Belly since. Thank you Kathy and Jodi!!

Jodi has been fostering Jelly Belly, now called Ellie. Jodi said Ellie is a dream, well behaved, no vices, except for that hunger strike, which thankfully is now over. I have also been trying to watch Ellie on the weekends to give Jodi a break and also because I LOVE this dog! She is awesome.

I have a theory about Ellie. She was picked up by Animal Control in September but it was clear to everyone this dog was never a stray dog, nor probably spent more then a few hours outside of a house her life. She was clean, her nails trimmed, her teeth clean and white, no calluses and so well behaved. I think, mostly due to her size that she was someone's shadow, maybe an older person that was not very active. She clearly ate people food, so maybe this person fed her what they ate. She absolutely refused all food except people food up until a two weeks ago. She knows how to walk on a leash, she knows not to get on the furniture unless you let her. She loves everyone. She was definately someone's prized companion. Ellie was happy dog when we first got her, but she also had a sadness to her too. Like she was missing someone. I am not sure if she really was but that is my theory and I think I am right about this. I think she was mourning her family. She clearly was loved and she has so much love to give as well.

Well now Ellie has a new family, the EBBRR family! Jodi has nothing but great things to say about her and we hope she gets adopted soon. Ellie has lost 14lbs since she has been with us and not everyone can tell but she is starting to loose the flab. :) Ellie is a dream at the vets, what dog likes the vets? She does! Look how relaxed she is!
We weighed her in at 88lbs. ! Yeah Ellie! Jodi plays lots of games with Ellie and walks her all over Fells Point. This dog is starting to become a celebrity! Ellie is a great dog and has an exceptional personality. Everyone falls hard for her and we think she is ready for adoption to the right family. She still has some medical challenges, like loosing more then 30lbs before she can be spayed and staying on a strict diet but other then that this girl is a walk in the park. Oh yeah, she loves walks in the park!

Jelly Belly - Our Newest Rescue

Read all the way through for Updates!Jelly Belly is Safe! This BBD (Big Beautiful Doggie) was out of time at the shelter but thanks to some teamwork she is safe and sound today!

Jelly Belly or JB as she has been affectionately nicknamed by her sponsor Jen is now safe and sound at Light Street Animal Hospital getting a complete veterinary work up.

Jelly Belly came in as a stray at BARCS where she quickly became a staff favorite. Thanks to Amie and Kat at the shelter for getting her story out there! Thank you to Jen and Maddy for getting her into the hospital and finally thanks to Kathy at Happy Hound Hotel for allowing us to board JB there while we work on her foster home applications.

Jelly Belly has no history since she was found strolling the streets. Her age is estimated at 3.5 years old. She has done well with other dogs and shows minimal interest in kitties right now. We will have to test her further after we get to know her better. She has a very outgoing and loving personality and her tail is the fastest moving part of her whole body! :)

Jelly Belly needs a a foster home! We would like to find someone that will not let her snack and keep her on a strict diet and excercise her often. She definately can be a couch potato but you just can't share a bag of cookies with her while watching your shows. :) If you are interested in adopting her that is an option as well but she really needs to be in foster care first. Help Us Help Jelly Belly!!!

So I had some free time and I was browsing through some posts on The Pit Bull Forum (PBF). My friend that works at BARCS posted a video about a female dog named Jelly Belly. Well, lets just say it was love at first sight. I totally fell for this dog and I haven't even met her in person yet. I am going to visit her the first chance I get at the shelter this week and I am going to try my hardest to find a foster home for her.

I am a "big girl" myself, I can totally relate with the struggles Ms. Jelly Belly faces so I guess we can begin our Weight Loss Journey together! :)

On a serious note, EBBRR has no foster homes right now and we need your help to help the dogs. We have to have serious foster homes that can commit to a long term stay for our rescues. Jelly Belly looks so happy and spunky and she deserves a HOME.

9/18/2010 Update: Ok, so its been hard to find someone to adopt Jelly Belly straight from the shelter and my driving everyone crazy looking for a foster home hasn't worked yet either. A few people expressed interest in sponsoring her, so I am going to look into boarding her temporarily and at least by her some time. I really do not like to board/kennel a dog long term but I know its going to be a challenge to find a foster home for this girl. I don't want to give up on her! It was love right away.

To Raise Awareness for Pit Bulls

Baltimore–The Baltimore Animal Welfare Alliance (BAWA) and MidAtlanticBullyBuddies, Inc. (MABB) invite all animal lovers to attend “Give Pits a Chance” on Saturday, October 9, 2010at Du Burns Arena from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free to the public; however dogs are not permitted. Adoptable pit bulls from local rescue groups will be available at the event.

The goal of the event is to spread awareness of the plight of pit bulls, to transform negative stereotypes and misconceptions about the breed, and to help support local shelters and pit bull friendly rescue groups.

The event will feature several local bully breed rescue groups, information and facts regarding the true temperament of the breed, training tips and agility demonstrations, children’s activities, raffles, information on volunteer opportunities, the Pin-ups for Pit Bulls models and more. BAWA consists of the Maryland SPCA, Baltimore Humane Society and Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care Shelter and Baltimore City Animal Control. Well I thought I would update everyone on Topaz, our blue beauty that was adopted in August. It has only been 4 weeks but it seems like they have been a family forever. I really think I found the perfect family for her and that makes me feel good. :)

The popularity of the pit bull for its strength and sometimes for illegal dog fights, has resulted in a massive overpopulation, strays on the street and abused animals.

WJZ brought you a story this week about a pit bull whose nose had been severed before the dog was dumped in a stranger's yard.

The SPCA tells Suzanne Collins pit bulls are the primary victims of animal abuse and it's trying to prevent that.

At the city animal shelter, there is one pit bull after another. The same is true at the SPCA. The popularity of this breed for its strength and sometimes for illegal dog fights, has resulted in a massive overpopulation, strays on the street and abused animals.

"If there's a vulnerable pet, no one is looking after the pet. Unfortunately that's an easy way to hurt something that's just there. And it's really hard to understand the mindset," said Aileen Gabbey, SPCA.

On Sunday, a pit bull with it's nose cut off was dumped in a stranger's yard. To prevent this kind of abuse, the SPCA has Pit-Fix.

By spaying and neutering pit bulls and reducing the population, there should be less abuse. On Tuesday, five pits had the surgery. A vet says they often come in unhealthy or injured.

"Yesterday we had two with scars on their faces, either fought or played really rough with each other or other dogs. We see a lot of undernourished dogs," said Dr. Cristina Mollenkopf, veterinarian.

The city Anti-Animal Abuse Task Force recommends the spay and neutering of pit bulls, but it does take money. The SPCA clinic will do it for a cost, but teenagers who own them often don't have the money or motivation. There's talk of educating that group of young people.

"Getting into schools, talking to schools. Getting into the juvenile system. Talking to people who may be offenders or starting out in that path," said Debbie Rahls, BARCS Shelter.

At the city shelter Tuesday, there was a nursing mother and her pups.

The female had a litter of four puppies. You take the two adults who were not spayed or neutered and double their numbers. That is why there's such a problem with a burgeoning population of pit bulls.

Most litters are six or eight pups. Pit bulls aren't easy to adopt either because some people fear they're aggressive.

"It makes me sad, but these dogs are so nice. If I had my choice, I would work exclusively with pit bulls," said John Clark, vet tech.

Couple Finds Abused Dog In East Baltimore Yard

An East Baltimore couple found an abused pit bull in their yard.

A shocking find in a couple's East Baltimore yard.

Adam May reports a couple found a pit bull, mutilated and missing half its nose.

In this WJZ exclusive, they're sending a message to whomever did it.

"That's anger, someone expressed anger toward that dog," said Antoine White.

Antoine White and his girlfriend couldn't believe their eyes when they looked outside their home.

"It looks like someone actually bit his nose off, tried to cut it and all of that other stuff, and he's really bad off," said Tameka Greene.

The couple locked up the suffering pit bull. But they were speculating on why someone would do such a thing as they waited for Baltimore City Animal Control.

"Keep his way from finding his way home, because you know dogs rely on smell," said White.

Two weeks ago a city task force issued a report on Baltimore's widespread animal abuse problem, resulting in 47 recommendations.

"One of the best things to do is to educate the public as to what constitutes animal abuse," Caroline Griffin, Task Force Chair.

Dog advocates want better ways to identify the signs of fighting, abuse and neglect. They also want better preservation of evidence, more police officers assigned to animal control and increased spay and neuters programs for pit bulls. Lastly, they want new laws for animal crimes and even a cruelty czar.

The mayor is reviewing the proposed solutions

"I don't ask for a report or document that's gonna sit on the shelf, these are things we're gonna take and try to find way to implement the best recommendations out of it," said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

In the meantime, the couple who found this dog has a message for its previous owner.

"Someone needs to cut your nose off, some needs to keep you from finding your way home," said White.

"How could someone do that to an innocent dog that like that?" said Greene. "I hope he can recover and someone can adopt him."

A veterinarian will examine the dog.

Topaz - Adopted....Again!

Well Topaz is now in her third home to date. First home surrendered her to the shelter. Then my brother and his girlfriend adopted her... things were perfect until their relationship changed. Topaz has been around infants and toddlers since she was a few months old and she is wonderful with children! Topaz, I think has met her match... The Robert's!

The Robert's application on paper was excellent. I felt very comfortable with them right away. Sue, from Twin Tiers Rescue, did a home visit for me with only a days notice! Thank you Sue!!! Sue gave the official thumbs up and we met the family at The Happy Hound Hotel in PA.

I think it was love at first site... but I will wait to see how things go. I think this was a perfect match! What do you think?

Zoe is Coming Back to Rescue :(

Zoe is a beautiful girl that we placed almost 7 years ago. Her owner has fallen on very hard times and is crushed as the thought of leaving her behind. You can see her baby picture...she was adorable. Zoe needs to be the only dog in the house and a family with large breed experience is preferred.

This is what her owner wrote about her: Zoe is a big beautiful girl. She loves to snuggle under the covers and keep you warm. She lives in a house with kitties and does well with them, unless they try to eat her food then the chase is on-she is protective of her food. She is good around kids; she lives in a house with a three year old. She will bark if strangers are at the door but will welcome them with licks and wags if Mom says they are okay. Zoe does not like other dogs in her house. She will put up with them for a short while but if they pester her she will let them know to back off. She does not like thunder storms or fireworks-usually runs under a table for cover. She is very healthy-just goes to the vet for routine check-ups and vaccinations. She is not fond of the going to the vets-big baby that shakes and drools. She lives where she has a yard to run around and fetch balls and sticks. She likes sunning herself and rolling in the grass-on hot days she plays in her pool. This is hard for Mom to put her up for adoption but life has handed us some unexpected changes and she has to move into an apartment in town. Zoe needs space to run around. Zoe has a huge heart and will give her love freely if given the opportunity.

Topaz is Looking for a Home

Topaz is a beautiful, sweet, young lady. Topaz was pulled from the Montgomery County Humane Society and has been fostered with a young baby in the home. Topaz is a true testimant to the breed, she is a lover through and through. She adores children and is their shadow. She is very strong and will be required to attend obedience classes. She is happiest while she is on your lap or hanging all over you. Topaz is crate trained and is quiet as a mouse in the crate. She needs a consistant owner to work on her training.

Topaz is almost a year old, up to date on shots, microchipped and spayed. She is just looking for a couch to share with you!

Hello! I can not believe we are almost one month into the New Year! I have so many things that need to be done that I am no were close to getting started!

I have to say I am failing as a foster mom! I do not think I can part with my last two fosters, Bean & Bella!

I am excited to say that I personally am adopting Bella, the mangey pup with the quirky personality! I have absolutely fallen for this dog. She reminds me of a special dog that we lost in 2008, named Ginger. (And its funny but Bella is a ginger color.) Bella has a lot of things in common with Ginger and I think that is what has tugged at my heartstrings so much. She is definitely a challenge!

Bean, everyone fell in love with, but I was guarded because I think I knew Bella was not going anywhere. Bean is the most loving, sweetest, cutest little dog you can ever meet! Even at his rowdiest he is a gentle soul. I knew he would be great for a family with children and we have had a few very serious applications on him but as much I tried to keep him and Bella seperated he did end up with mange and that is a real turn off for people! So I had two pups to treat, which was actually easier then trying to keep everything seperate. As Bean is growing, we are noticing some changes, I guess for compensating with a missing leg so we are going to have a specialist keep an eye on him. Even though I have fought myself with this I don't think I can part with him. I am a foster failure!!!!!

Time to go but I expect to have some free time to update things soon! Who knows my next post maybe a family portrait.... because Bean & Bella aren't going anywhere!

For those people that had a strong interest in Bean & Bella I have spoke with most of them about my feelings about adopting them both and they have given me their blessings.... hope everyone out there does too.

Hello friends... meet Isabella our little foster with some skin issues. We call this little girl, Bella because my mother has been dying for a granddaughter with this name...so we gave her a foster furchild!

Bella is very upset that we did not add her to this blog earlier because she was in our care a whole month before Mr. Bean came to stay. She pouted until I finally gave in, so here is Bella's Post!

Bella (Golden Retriver/Pit Bull)came to us in August 2009 from BARCS. She had both, Sarcoptic and Demodex Mange. She was hot to the touch and very lethargic. We gave her a few days to settle in and she started to relax after being in the shelter. (so stressful there) We have been treating her for the mange for two months. She has up and down weeks, and almost as soon as she is off the medicine it only takes a few days before she starts up again. We are trying to boost up her immune system by feeding her a raw diet with supplements.

Bella has a hearty appetite and does not like to share her food with other dogs. (That goes for treats too) She is fine if a person takes her food but no other animals. Bella loves to take walks and she loves her big brother, Odie. She gives him puppy kisses all the time. Odie acts tough and ignores her kisses but we all know he is starting to like this little Bella girl.

I am going to try and describe Bella's personality... she reminds me of a very special dog we had named Ginger. They have a lot of the same personality traits. Bella is very sweet and she gets very happy to see you, but she is not a "lick you all over" type of puppy. As soon as you pick her up she will give you a kiss or two but thats it! She loves other dogs right now, and this can change as she gets older, but she is very puppish with an adult dog. Now that Bean is at the house well we have met her other personality...which is a lot like our dog Ginger. She is a very jealous puppy. She intercepts Bean if he tries to say hello to our dog Odie. She will do her best to steal Bean's treats or toys. She does not try this with Odie, but she definately knows she is a little older, bigger and stronger then Bean and she bullies him if we let her. She also does something that is really cute...she takes her paw and smacks Bean in the head, then they play together. She is not aggressive just pushy. When it comes to going outside and playing, Bella reminds me of one of my favorite SNL skits with Amy Poehler as Kaitlyn. If you watch these videos you can probably picture what life with Bella will be like! When she gets on a roll she zooms around and around you and drives you crazy!

Bean's First Weekend in Foster Care

We, picked Bean up on Thursday 9/24/2009. He is a pretty mellow pup, he likes to enjoy the scenery...and chase the cat. Bean gets around wonderfully, which you will see in the videos we will post later. Bean is being fostered with another pit bull mix puppy, named Bella that is quite hurt we are not writing about her. (She is the jealous type!)

We had to get creative this weekend to help raise money for Bean's vet bill at Langley Animal Hospital, so we had an imprompto yard sale this weekend! Even though it drizzled, someone removed our signs, and it was last minute we still made $100.00 towards his bill. We will try again next weekend.

I wanted Bean to be at the yard sale (Since he already has a fan club) so I put an ad on craigslist looking for a play pen for a baby. I let them know it was for Bean and we had a lot of people offer their pack and plays for him. Thank you to all. The pen Bean was in was perfect, it was tent like material (good for a dog!) and it had a screen that zippered so we can unzip it and he could stroll on out. He was a perfect pup on his day out. We will update everyone on the next yard sale.

Bean has officially arrived into Foster Care with EBBRR! He has a playmate around the similiar age to play with when he feels better.(I have neglected to blog about...we don't want Bella to feel left out so this weekend we will write about her!)

B-More Dog @ BARCS & The Pigtown Festival

Hello friends... I know this is an EBBRR blog but you know I like to dabble in a little bit of everything. Here are some pics that I took while volunteering with B-More Dog, Inc.

First I hit the town September 12 early in the AM to attend the BARCS Rabies Clinic. I met some really nice shelter dogs and really nice dog owners. You can see some pics here: BARCS' Pics

This cutie was Beethoven..he was a little guy with a big attitude. We also were able to give this group new leashes and collars.

Then we headed over to the Pigtown Festival in West Baltimore. Wow, what fun it was! Lots of well behaved dogs and proud owners. Good food and great music! We had a blast.

Bean is coming into rescue the weekend of 9/24/2009. He just had his leg removed on Monday and we want to make sure everything went well with his surgery. Bean the Pup September 2009

I have a real cutie pie I would like to introduce to you….everyone meet Bean. This little pup is currently in the hospital awaiting surgery to possibly remove his leg up to the hip. You can see how much he has grown while staying at Langley Animal Hospital. They have had Bean in their care since the beginning of August.

Bean’s story is that someone was working in a home and threw some lumber accidently hitting him. They brought him to Langley Animal Hospital for treatment. The family could not afford the treatment and abandoned the dog at the hospital. You can see in his first puppy picture how swollen his little toes were. They removed the pad only of his leg but feel he needs to have his whole leg removed. The hospital has two choices, one to perform the surgery and release him to rescue or they will have euthanize him. (Hospital Policy) I have spoken with the staff and they truly are dedicated to this puppy and they want to avoid euthanasia at all costs. They have estimated the surgery to run about $1500.00 but we are trying to work other arrangements out with them. (UPDATE: Bean's total is capped at 1500.00 we only need $500.00 to go! Thank you for your help!)
I have offered to take Bean in our care and we hope he can have his surgery this week. He is a lively puppy and he is definitely the staff favorite. He is a little boy at 10lbs and estimated to be about 13 weeks old.
There has been a donation structure already in place for Bean so I will add their contact information first.

The first workshop will be held on May 31 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS), 301 Stockholm St., Baltimore.

The goal of the class is to provide dog owners with information and tools they may find useful in providing better care for their animals. We’ll be talking about the importance of keeping dogs safely confined in the home when they can’t be supervised, we’ll provide a brief primer on how dogs communicate via body language, and we’ll offer some advice on how to handle some common behavior problems.

BALTIMORE, MD. – B-More Dog Inc., a new Baltimore-based nonprofit advocating for responsible dog ownership, is pleased to announce that Oct. 25 is the second annual National Pit Bull Awareness Day.

Last year, in light of the negative publicity surrounding pit bulls in our nation, Bless the Bullys, a pit bull rescue and education organization based in Tennessee, created National Pit Bull Awareness Day. This event’s goal is to focus on the pit bulls and their owners who aren’t making the news: Responsible, devoted owners that responsibly care for their dogs and do their best to make sure their dogs are good ambassadors for the breed. Last year, pit bull owners throughout the United States illustrated to the world what a responsible pit bull owner looks like—by holding rallies and seminars, handing out literature, and raising awareness about this misunderstood breed.

This year, B-More Dog encourages responsible pit bull owners in the Baltimore area to celebrate National Pit Bull Awareness Day. Walk your well-behaved dog in your local park or neighborhood. Find out how to certify your dog as a Canine Good Citizen or seek training advice for your rowdy dog. Talk to your local pet store about putting out fliers that explain the myths vs. the facts about pit bulls.

You can also join B-More Dog and help us spread the word about how important it is for all dog owners—particularly owners of pit bulls—to B-More Responsible.

Daddie Needs a Home

Meet Daddie! He is a 5-year-old 60-pound Canine Good Citizen Certified American pit bull terrier. His time was up at the local shelter and he was scheduled to be euthanized, but a trainer who holds classes at the shelter saw what a fantastic temperament and sweet personality he has and decided to take him in until a forever home can be found. Daddie is very calm and good-natured. He loves people, and he likes to sit on your feet and give LOTS of kisses. He's great with kids, though he is quite big and clumsy, so homes with young children are not recommended.

He does not like cats, and he is selective about what dogs he will get along with, so a home as an only dog would be best. He was kenneled successfully at the shelter with a compatible female, so a home with the right female dog might be possible for him.

Daddie cannot stay for too long in his foster home, as there are other dogs in the home that don't appreciate his presence. Daddie really just wants to cuddle on the couch, and he doesn't get to do as much of that as he'd like in his foster home, so we'd like to get him into a forever home soon. A home check will be required, and references will be checked. An 8-week training course will be provided and is recommended once Daddie is adopted- both to build your new bond with him as well as to re-earn the Canine Good Citizen as his new owner!

If you're looking for a big, lovable, lug with a sweet personality and easygoing demeanor, Daddie may be your dog! He will make a great family/companion dog.

Since Daddie has been staying here, he has transformed from the lazy boy that walked around the shelter grounds with one of the volunteers. As many may know, shelter life is stressful and dogs often do not show their true colors in a shelter environment. Daddie has turned out to be a silly, goofy, and playful boy whose point it is to make his handler laugh. He is still gentle, handler sensitive, and very responsive to what's requested of him. . .but he's become so much more.

Daddie is required to sit and wait for his meals, and has to give attention before he is released to eat as well. Sometimes he is confused and will "perform," giving his paw in efforts to enjoy his meal faster. I usually humor him, taking his paw in my hand. Daddie has always walked wonderfully on leash, so that is nothing new, but he is also respectful while walking on stairs- he won't run past and accidentally trip you, as some dogs may.

Although he is not able to have much free time here, he definitely finds a way to make me smile every day. He isn't very interested in toys or treats and, until recently, he has been one of those dogs that will save his crate treats (all day) until he has a moment to enjoy them in the presence of someone. However, until recently, he hasn't had a marrow bone!! Daddie had his first raw marrow bone while in my care the other day- he actually looks forward to going back to his crate to enjoy it. Spending a majority of time alone isn't the best for a dog, but he is remaining in good spirits and is even enthusiastic. . .for marrow bone!

UPDATE 7/16/08
Daddie has been here nearly two months now. He is still in good spirits, although is becoming a bit restless, reasonably so. . .maybe it's me becoming restless wanting a home for him. Daddie attended the Mason-Dixon Classic with my dogs and I last month. We were there for a weekend trip. While I was doing photography and spending the weekend outdoors, the dogs were enjoying the weekend outside of the house as well. Yes, we all slept outside for three days!! It was great, and Daddie did fine, even through the crazy thunderstorm that hit us on Saturday night.

Since Daddie has been here a while now and it's been known that he's selective about the dogs he will accept, I decided that it was time to introduce him to my Staffy Bull, Star. Like Daddie, Star does not always get along well with all dogs, and we now know that she doesn't much care for Daddie, either! Daddie did great, however. When she grumbled at him, he responded appropriately and gave her space. Since meeting Star, he has become infatuated with her. Although she doesn't appreciate his advances, he still tries. . .let's give the boy some credit!!

Other notes- Daddie loves to be groomed. He will stand still while being brushed for as long as you can stand to brush him, and he readily gives his paw to clip nails. I prefer to give bones to clean teeth, but he is fine with handling of his mouth as well.

Sophia Needs a Home!

Meet Sophia!

This sweet little girl was found wandering the streets in Baltimore when a friendly person picked her up and brought her to a local animal hospital. The staff at the hospital fell in love with her sweet disposition but by law they had to turn her over to animal control. She was never claimed by her owner despite the efforts made by the hospital employee's (flyers were put up and she was posted on petfinder as well as crasigslist). When her 5 day hold was up and she was slated to be euthanized she was rescued again by the hospital staff!

Sophia's life was saved and only a week later she helped save another life! She donated blood to a very critical dog, who without her blood, would not be here today! Sophia is estimated to be a year old and is a delight to be around. She does get excited when meeting new people but settles quickly, we are currently teaching her how to greet people without jumping and is responding well to training. She knows how to sit, speak, give paw, and walks well on a leash. She is housebroken and crate trained!! We think she has some pit bull in her but we are not sure what else, she had HUGE ears and has hound dog markings. So far she has been good around every other dog she meets, but we will only place her in a home as the only dog or in a home with another male dog. We are unsure how she is with cats (she was fine at the hospital when cats would swat at her - she just ignored them). We do not know how she is with children and will only place her with older kids.

We have not seen any aggression from this dog, only happy puppy behavior filled with kisses!

When she was rescued she was limping, upon examination (and radiographs) it was determined she has a luxating patella (her knee cap slips out of place). She is no longer limping but this will be surgically corrected when she is spayed. There will be no long term effects from this condition and it should not keep you from wanting to adopt her!

She is up to date on vaccines, heartworm/lymes negative, and dewormed.

Pit Bull Shot in Baltimore County, MD

Hello, Ethical Bull Breed Rescue and Referral, as well as many other pit bull rescues were contacted today about Pepper, the pit bull, shot by multiple times in Baltimore County, MD. We are assisting the owner with financial donations. Please help if you can.On Sunday, April 27, 2008 a pit bull named Pepper was shot multiple times by a neighbor. Pepper, a 1.5 year old pit bull has been darting out the front door. Yesterday while her owner's were not home, she slipped past a friend and out the door she went. They immediately gave chase, only to get about a football field away to come face to face with a man shooting at Pepper. Pepper ran under a truck and the man went under the truck after, I assume to execute her. Somehow they managed to get in between the man and the dog. The man would not let them touch Pepper until the police came. Neighbors and children were crying in the streets. The police came, filed a report and confiscated his gun. Meanwhile Pepper had 3 gunshots to her face and legs and possibly more. Her wounds are being stiched up, and the bleeding controlled but her leg it is unknown if she will need further surgery. They want to give her some time.Pepper was rushed to the ER around 8pm. Where do I start with Frankie - he's perfect! This 4.5 year old boy is house broken, crate trained, and knows basic obedience commands. He is an active boy when outside but also LOVES to curl up to you on the couch or in bed. He is very relaxed when in the house and wants nothing more than to be with his people. He loves to play fetch or just run in the field. He enjoys going for hikes in the woods and in a very independent dog, not needy at all. He is good with other dogs as long as they do not challenge him but prefers people over other animals - he even ignores cats even when they try to swipe at him! He has been good with kids but we request no small children only because of his size (he has been around small children but doesn't realize he is 70 pounds and can bump into them and knock them over). We are requiring a fenced in yard for him because he likes to run so much - he deserves it.

Frank cam to our rescue when he was 8 weeks old and was adopted when he was 9 weeks old and has had the same owner ever since. He has moved to California and back and enjoyed ever minute of it! His owner recently had a baby and doesn't feel she has the time to devote to Frankie anymore so he is back with us. He listens better than some of my own dogs (on and off leash) and will follow you from room to room. This boy has been nothing but faithful and deserves a home that will keep him until his last days!

He is up to date on vaccines, heatworm negative and on prevention, and neutered. He did test postitive for lymes disease but has already finished his treatment and is doing well (he wasn't even showing signs of lymes disease) Recently (Sunday 3/2) Frankie injured his right hind leg while running. He partially tore his cruciate ligament or ACL, radiographs were taken and he is scheduled for surgery on 3/11. He is expected to make a full recovery and this will not be a problem for his future. He will have to rest for a few months while recovering (which basically means no free running) but will be back to his normal self in no time. Please do not let this be a factor in adopting Frank, if you would like to visit please let me know - once you meet this boy you will fall in love - EVERYONE does!!

Frankie had his TTA surgery today to correct his torn ACL ligament and did great. He will be recovering for a few weeks and is not allowed to free run for a few months but is still in high spirits and wagging his tail! He is still available for adoption at any time so please feel free to contact if you would like more information or have questions about this fabulous boy! This boy needs a foster home or better yet a forever home ASAP. Due to lack of foster homes he is being boarded at a vet clinic. More pictures and updates coming.

Honey Settles in...

Frank has traveled the United States – twice! And gone swimming in both oceans. He is an avid hiker and great with his basic obedience and leash manners.
He will bark at strangers who approach the house to protect his family. He is a big fun guy, but would benefit from a person, couple or family that would make him an tight part of their circle. He is not dog aggressive or cat aggressive. Around other dogs, he generally ignores them to play with a log or toy.

This beautiful girl is named Honey. Honey quickly outgrew her owners. Honey is a dog we rescued from a life of being tied to a tree. Her owners were well meaning but as she grew, they could not control her. She was forced to be tethered to a tree, sometimes getting loose and running the neighborhood. Honey definately recieved all the TLC a puppy needs, as she is very sweet and loves people. Honey is an extremely affectionate dog, period. She will lick you to death and wants to be a lap dog. She really had no formal obedience and did not walk on a leash well. She pretty much dragged anyone. Honey has been evaluated and began training and has been in foster care for a few months. Her foster family, who is very experienced with bulldogs, they have put a lot of work into getting Honey looking as beautiful as she does now. They have gracioulsy offered their obedience training services for our rescue as well. Honey is well on her way to becoming a well adjusted member of the family. Are you the family for her? Due the situation with her basically learning the ABC's of manners at one year of age, we will require a mandatory obedience contract with her adoption. We prefer her to be adopted in the MD/VA or surrounding areas. We will be checking in with her progress, and refuse to allow another family put her training on the back burner. Please do not apply if you are not 100% dedicated to training and making this dog a family member. You will not find a better group of people then the Old Glory gang to gather advice on training and American Bulldogs. Honey is spayed and up to date on her vaccines. Below is an update from her foster family, Old Glory American Bulldogs. We are currently fostering her and working on her manners. She does not display any symptoms of an abused dog. The woman who owned her was very elderly woman. She told me she loved her very much, but she was just overwhelmed with her energy and athleticism, as she changed from a puppy to an adult. That's why she was willing to foster her out to a rescue who could find the RIGHT person or family for Honey. For the last 3-5 months she was kept tied to a tree and did not have much human interaction. It is clear that she was loved and cared for when she was younger. She is one year old. The old woman's adult son had taken her to the vet for regular shots and check ups. She is in perfect health, Full of energy. And extremely SWEET. A few of us created this yahoo group, BSL-MD@yahoogroups.com. There was a proposed BSL Bill, called #70-07 in Baltimore County. The details will follow my message. We were outraged with the SEVERE restrictions this bill was focusing on. Muzzling of pit bulls, outdoor kennels for pit bulls, mandatory insurance on the dogs. It was crazy. The proposer of this bill was steadfast in his decision and luckily the rest of the council did not feel the same.

On October 15, 2007. Pit bull owners united and we had a peaceful rally outside of the courthouse the day this bill was voted on. Here are some pictures from the event, courtesty of Alexis.

I have been doing Pit Bull and American Bulldog rescue here in Maryland since 1992. I started off volunteering with shelters and then moved on to helping other rescues with transports and then I started volunteering with an American Bulldog Rescue. Eventually it became time to start our own, which is EBBRR. (Ethical Bull Breed Rescue and Referral)

Originally the plans were to become a one, stop, shop for "bulldog type" breeds. We wanted to provide individual breed characteritics and information to help people make more informed choices. We also wanted to become a huge meeting place for all bull breed rescues to showcase their dogs. Unfortunately things snowballed so quickly, we really never had enough time to create the website we always wanted. I was not prepared to receive approx 500 emails a day, from all over the United States! There are so many dogs out there being given up and no one wants to take their dog to the shelter.....but they also do not realise we do this out of our homes. It really started to become depressing. After a few years of trying to save the world, I realised I can only do what I can do. Period. It was a hard adjustment and it certainly was a hard lesson to learn but I finally got it!

Right now the rescue end of EBBRR is on hiatus. We are taking a much needed rest. The past 4-5 years have been really hard and I need a break!! I am focusing on rebuilding the website the way we wanted it and finalizing the non profit status of the group.
